the battlement


Now, I don't know how I got from reading Ian Jack's introduction to 'Wuthering Heights' to brooding over detailed defence walls structure, but I sure did.
Up there, where you see B, you see crenels, and between them - merlons.
A crenel is basically a sophisticated kind of chink through which archers and/or crossbowmen shot their enemies, while a merlon is something that stands between the crenels.

Crenels' literary pseudonyms include: carnels, embrasures, loops and wheelers.
Merlons are also known as cops or kneelers.

And yes, I'm tired and bored.
